Steven Brandes

KEARNEY — A Lincoln man is in prison for stealing a car in Kearney after escaping from a medical facility.

Steven Brandes, 18, was sentenced to one to three years at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility in Omaha for felony theft of the vehicle in June.

He was also given six months in prison for misdemeanor theft of property from inside the vehicle.

The sentences will be served at the same time.

Judge Bill Wright sentenced Brandes last week in Buffalo County District Court.

The thefts occurred after Brandes walked away from Richard Young Hospital June 7.

Brandes also assaulted a Richard Young employee as he left the facility but has already served 30 days in jail for that offense.

After leaving the hospital, Brandes took a 1995 Chrysler Concorde in the 4100 block of Bel Air Drive, then drove to Scottsbluff. Along the way, he sold an iPod and sunglasses from the vehicle for gas money.

He was arrested a few days later at a home in Gering.
