KEARNEY - Students and the community can experience the culture, food and entertainment of Japan during Sunday's Japanese Festival.

The Japanese Association at Kearney will sponsor the 2009 Japanese Festival at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

"The Japanese Festival is important because the event is a big chance to teach about our culture to UNK students and Kearney's people, and knowing each other is such an important factor to building good relationships between us," JAK Public Relations Officer Yuya Tanebe wrote in an e-mail interview.

The event, which is free, will be from 5-8 p.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room.

Tanebe said the purpose of the festival is to allow people to better understand Japan.

The event will feature traditional Japanese food such as Karaage, which is a Japanese fried chicken, potato salad and ketchup rice, as well as a traditional Japanese ethnic dance called soran and traditional Japanese songs.

In addition, there will be booths featuring Japanese TV games, Kanji face painting, costumes and pop music.

"For Japanese people, this event is an opportunity to share our culture with many non-Japanese people," Tanebe said. "We are really glad to share our culture with everyone who is non-Japanese."

JAK is a student-run organization that creates and promotes a better understanding of Japan and of the cultural exchange among the student body, faculty and staff of UNK and the community.
