KEARNEY - A convicted felon could be headed back to prison after being convicted of burglarizing the Sand Bar in Pleasanton, and trying to burglarize an Elm Creek business.
Michael Bilby, 25, of Kearney pleaded no contest in Buffalo County District Court to burglarizing the Sand Bar, attempted burglary of Stuck's Last Call in Elm Creek, and theft by receiving stolen property between $500 and $1,500, all on Aug. 19. The charges are all felonies.
In exchange for his pleas, an allegation that Bilby was a habitual criminal was dismissed.
Bilby's accomplice, Brianna Frerichs, 20, pleaded no contest to a single count of attempted theft, a misdemeanor.
Bilby and Frerichs were both ordered to undergo presentence investigations, including drug and alcohol evaluations, to be conducted by the state probation department. Those findings will be sent to Judge Bill Wright for him to use in determining his sentence.
Sentencing for both Bilby and Frerichs is scheduled for December.
On Aug. 19, the front doors of the Sand Bar in Pleasanton and Stuck's Last Call were shattered. At the Sand Bar suspects took $450 in cash, a video game machine and a bottle of Jägermeister. Nothing was taken in the Elm Creek incident.
Six other burglaries involving their front doors being shattered had taken place outside of Buffalo County.
Working with police in other counties, Bilby and Frerichs were identified as possible suspects in the Pleasanton and Elm Creek cases. Police obtained a search warrant for the couple's home in south Kearney and found numerous items reported stolen - cigarettes, lighters, razor blades, a video machine and cough drops - from burglaries reported in Adams, Hall, Loup, Howard and Greeley counties.
Bilby and Frerichs were interviewed by police and later arrested.
