KEARNEY — Kearney police and firefighters are asking the public to keep an eye out for arsonists starting Dumpster fires.
Since Nov. 7, seven fires have been reported in trash cans or Dumpsters throughout the city. Three fires were started Tuesday night within 24 minutes.
The Kearney Police Department believes more than one person may be involved in starting the fires. However, it doesn’t have descriptions of the suspects.
The fires were:
- Nov. 7 — A fire was started about midnight in two trash cans at Yanney Heritage Park. Damage estimate was $80.
- Monday — A trash can was placed in the elevator door area at the observation tower at Yanney Park at 6:35 p.m. then ignited. Damage estimate was $150.
- Monday — A fire was started in a Dumpster in an alley behind Game Stop at 8 W. 56th St. at 8:55 p.m. Damage was estimated at $100.
- Tuesday — Fire was started in a trash can near the shelter north of the Park Elementary School playground around 7:04 p.m. Damage was estimated at $30.
- Tuesday — Fire was started in a trash can near the playground at Centennial Park at 7:16 p.m. Damage was estimated at $625.
- Tuesday — Fire was started in a trash can behind Hastings Entertainment at 7:28 p.m. Damage was estimated at $100.
Anyone with information about the fires, or who may see suspicious activity around a trash can or Dumpster, is asked to contact Kearney Police at 237-2104, the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office at 236-8555, or Crimestoppers at 237-3424.
