Pianist May performs Mon. in Concerts-on-the-Platte
KEARNEY — Nathanael May of Missouri Western University will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Fine Arts Recital Hall at the University of Nebraska at Kearney as part of the Concerts-on-the-Platte series.
The event is free.
May, a pianist, has presented recitals in the U.S., Europe and the Near East. His advocacy of music by living composers has resulted in numerous recordings and performances of more than 25 works.
He is the founder and artistic director of the soundSCAPE composition and performance exchange, a festival for new music in Pavia, Italy.
Thanksgiving Eve Service is Wed. at First Lutheran
KEARNEY — First Lutheran Church in Kearney will have its annual Community Thanksgiving Eve Service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
A pie social will follow the service at 8 p.m. in Centennial Hall at 3315 Ave. G.
CCC’s Holdrege Center to get $321K renovation
HOLDREGE — Central Community College will spend about $321,000 to renovate the college’s Holdrege Center.
According to a press release, the CCC Board of Governors approved spending the money Thursday.
A new lease will more than double the amount of space for the center, which is located in the Agriculture Center at the Phelps County Fairgrounds in Holdrege.
Diana Watson, regional coordinator at the center, said the expansion will include a third video conference classroom and will give the center the ability to originate as well as receive video classes.
The center also will have additional classroom space for training, community education classes, quiet study and testing areas; new space for nursing assistant and medical assistant classes; and a computer lab. The renovation is scheduled for completion by the beginning of the fall semester.
Cozad man gets probation for immigrant marriage fraud
OMAHA — Shane Schutte, 35, of Cozad was sentenced today in U.S. District Court to five years of probation for his conviction for marriage fraud and fraud and misuse of immigration documents.
In addition to probation, Judge Richard G. Kopf Schutte ordered Schutte to pay a fine of $2,000 and $200 in special assessments.
Schutte pled guilty to entering into a marriage with an illegal alien in December 2005 with the intent to evade the immigration laws of the United States. Schutte agreed to marry the illegal alien for money and agreed to falsify documents allowing the alien to apply for eligibility to remain in the United States. In fact, Schutte did not live with the woman and had been previously married.
Schutte was arrested June 24 and his trial was Sept. 3.
Blood donors have shot at winning baseball bat
KEARNEY — In an effort to increase the blood supply in the holiday season, all whole blood donors at Kearney blood drives from Saturday to Dec. 31 will be eligible to win one of five personalized Louisville Slugger baseball bats.
To give blood, call 800-GIVE-LIFE or visit givebloodgivelife.org to find a blood drive or to make an appointment.
The 34-inch major-league-size bats can be personalized with the name of the winner of each Louisville Slugger. Winners will be chosen Jan. 4.
All blood types are needed. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. People who are 17 years old, or 16 with parental permission, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years old and younger also have to meet height and weight requirements.
