KEARNEY - The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire Thursday night after a dog knocked over a burning candle.

According to a press release from KVFD, the fire was at Southview Apartments, 1004 W. 11th Street, apt. K37 about 6:30 p.m.

The apartment's occupant, Joyce Shatters, left the room momentarily and then heard her smoke detector.

When she returned to her living room she found her dog had knocked a burning candle off an end table and onto her couch, igniting the couch.

NP Realty owns the apartments and there was about $44,000 in damage.

The fire was under control within about 20 minutes. Shatters was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital to be treated for some smoke inhalation.
